Volvo Crafts Modern-Day P1800 Sketches

Volvo P1800 Sketch2011 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Volvo P1800, and Volvo’s chief designer at its Monitoring and Concept Center has drawn up these sketches of what the iconic sports car might look like if it were in production today.

The original P1800 was sold between 1961 and 1963, with later versions, the 1800S, 10800E, and 1800ES sold through the mid-70s. The cars were known for their power, speed, and durability. A minimal number of cars were actually sold – Volvo built only 39,400 coupes and 8,000 sports wagons in the 1800 line – but the eye-catching rides gained icon status after being featured in the British TV series The Saint in the late 60s.

So far, Volvo designer Chris Benjamin’s drawings are merely digitized images; there are no plans for production.
